As part of its legal dispute with the US Federal Trade Commission, Microsoft has stated in recently released documents that Sony is expected to release a PS5 Slim later this year. In addition, the Xbox maker also believes that Sony is expected to release a mid-generation refresh – The PS5 Pro.
On the PS5 Slim, the documents said, “PlayStation likewise sells a less expensive Digital Edition for $399.99, and is expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price point.”
“PlayStation, meanwhile, currently offers two different versions of the PlayStation 5—one with a Blu-Ray player for physical media (Standard) and one without (Digital)—and is anticipated to release further differentiated Pro and Slim models in the near future”, it continued.
In September 2022, Tom Henderson of sister website Insider Gaming reported that Sony was working on a new PlayStation 5 model with a detachable disc drive. The same outlet also reported that a PS5 Pro was also in development for a holiday 2024 release.
According to Insider Gaming, the new PlayStation 5 is set to completely replace the original PS5 by the end of the year.
Sony is yet to officially comment on whether or not the company is making either of its consoles, but it’s worth noting that Insider Gaming accurately leaked other PlayStation hardware include the DualSense Edge, Project Q, and wireless earbuds, that have all been officially revealed. If Insider Gaming’s September 2023 release for the Slim is to be believed, then an announced should be made in the very near future.
During this year’s PlayStation Showcase, PlayStation’s Jim Ryan said, “we look forward to sharing more information in the near future” when talking on Project Q. So it’s entirely possible Sony has more surprises on the horizon.
